ShopTruth or Consequences, New Mexico-based fiber artist Rebecca Speakes’ career includes 30 years as a graphic designer, mostly as a self-employed freelancer. During this time she became familiar with methods of design, color theory, and repeating grid patterns. She has been a fiber artist since 1975 when she designed and crocheted clothes for herself. She searched for a different medium which would allow for greater design flexibility and found quilting. She has always loved color and shiny highlights, and utilizes foil stamping to add to the vibrant color of the batik fabrics she uses, and incorporates shapes from quilts as design motifs.
