Jennifer Bremer (Minneapolis, Minnesota) and her husband started Nokomis Knitting Company. They create handcrafted fiber items, sometimes with old fashioned knitting needles and other times with their antique sock knitting machines from the early 1900s. They love to experiment and push their tools to literally crank out a variety of pieces with quality materials and quality craftsmanship. They make a wide variety of products that are both creative and functional- including these solar-powered lanterns with colorful machine knit covers.

Patricia Carter (Minnetonka, Minnesota) is a fiber artist with a passion for creating handmade felt items using wet felting techniques. She has has always enjoyed textile and fiber arts, but her first experiences with wet felting a few years ago were transformative. The qualities of wool continue to amaze and delight her. She uses mostly merino top roving for her felt projects, but she also like trying out other wools (Finn/Icelandic, BFL, Cormo, Polwarth) and other natural fibers.

Danielle Claseman

Sierra Cole (Grand Rapids, Michigan) started felting in 2001 under the guidance of her boss (and now friend) while working at small town newspaper. Discovering a passion for fiber and color, she left the newspaper to pursue a full-time career as a fiber artist. She has participated in art shows throughout the Midwest, such as Laumeier, Ann Arbor Art Fair, Gold Coast, Art Fair on the Square Madison, 57th Street Chicago, and Penrod. She has also shown work at 337 Project Space, Light Gallery + Studio, Paint Creek Center for the Arts, and Processing Fiber at 250 Monroe. She was a participant in ArtPrize 2015 which was placed on the Juror Shortlist for Outstanding Venue by Steven Matijcio, Cincinnati-based Curator at the Contemporary Arts Center. Sierra graduated from Michigan State University in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree of fine art, with a focus on graphic design and printmaking. She lives and works in a 100+ year-old home in the Eastown neighborhood of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Sierra Cole

Blanca (Blanx) Dahlin (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is a traditional artist who came over from Mexico as a child. Textiles and woven items have always had a home in Blanx's life. Having learned how to knit in high school and how to do embroidery beading, Blanx has been able to bring the two together to make fiber art that acts as protection symbols for the wearer, including Evil Eye earrings.

For more than 20 years, Elsa Jo Ellison, a native of Wanamingo, Minnesota, has been sculpting wool from the sheep at the Ellison Sheep Farm. She has created an endless variety of original needle felted figures and creatures, each with its own personality, detailed eyes, and unique expression. The Ellison Sheep Farm in Zumbrota, Minnesota, raises Shetland, Icelandic, and Gotland sheep, and the entire family helps with sheep shearing every spring. Her favorite fleeces are set aside, labeled with each sheep’s name, then washed, carded, and dyed by hand in small batches.

Elsa Jo Ellison

Robbin Firth (Stillwater, Minnesota) is an acclaimed fiber artist and educator. She is known in the Midwest, nationally, and internationally for her original collection of fine felted and dyed wearable and decorative fiber art. Robbin Firth

Marlene Gaige (Minneapolis, Minnesota) started sewing as a small child and hasn't stopped since. She has been a long-time Textile Center member and instructor. Gaige has led numerous textile workshops focused on making and creativity, around the country for over 25 years. Her specialty is in pattern creation and she has worked with the Guthrie Theatre and has been featured in the book One Yard Wonders.

Marlene Gaige

Sherri Green is an African American woman, born, raised, and living in the Hopkinsville, Kentucky area. While growing up, she studied arts and crafts in school and with her mother. While attending the University of Minnesota, she saw an international shibori exhibit. She experimented, read, and taught herself. Around 2010, she started her business Bella-coup to make and sell her colorful shibori clothing, accessories, and home décor.

Sylvia Hernández lives in Brooklyn, New York, and has an art studio in her home. Sylvia is a self-taught fiber artist with 20+ years of experience and an active member in the Women of Color Quilters Network. She has exhibited in various venues in the United States and abroad. Maribeth Hite

Kim Hondel (Otsego, Minnesota) loves to do a variety of artwork, but hand stitching and mixed media art are her favorites. Her mother taught her to embroider at a young age in an attempt to teach her patience. It seemed to work because she continues to stitch today; she finds it therapeutic and relaxing. Mixed media art with an emphasis on paper and fabric combined (as well as stitching on both!) entered her life 20 years ago and has led her to take some courses to expand on techniques related to this type of art.

Carol Rajala Johnson

Riley Kleve (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is a queer, multimedia textile artist and educator who teaches classes at Textile Center. Blending vintage design and technique with contemporary materials and questions, their artwork explores artificial divides between art and craft, labor, value, and repetition. During the pandemic shutdown, they became reacquainted with their love of creating handcrafted artisanal yarn and have since launched a boutique yarn line, Better Days Yarn Co., with the mission of introducing fellow fiber enthusiasts to the joy of working with locally-produced handspun yarn.

Riley Kleve

Coming from a family of artists and art professors, Angela Kneale (Wayzata, Minnesota), has understood art traditions while also embracing the medium of fiber art early on, enjoying and exploring the tactile experience of textiles and fibers. Angela’s decades of exploration of off-loom weaving, batik, knitting, and contemporary quilting have reinforced artist Georgia O’Keefe’s idea of “filling space beautifully.” This ideal concept readily transmits to functional art, promoting the celebration and enjoyment of art in everyday items. Angela Kneale

Susan Koefod (West Saint Paul, Minnesota) creates in many forms. She is an award-winning novelist, poet, and has worked in many visual art media: watercolor, photography, and drawing. She began sewing at an early age, sewing apparel, handbags, and home goods such as quilts and pillows. She favors modern designs in textiles, and her latest interest is in improv quilting techniques. Most recently, she studied improv techniques with Cindy Grisdela and Carole Lyles. She is keen on making beautiful things useful.

Susan Koefod

Nancy Mambi (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is Textile Center's beloved librarian as well as a fiber artist who focuses on surface design. Nancy Mambi

Faye Matson, a retired sixth grade teacher from Lindstrom, Minnesota, now has more time to spend on her fiber art and her company, Purple Frog LLC. Her emphasis is on using machine embroidery to embellish flour sack towels, as well as activity books, totes, and tooth pillows. All of her products are designed and sewn by her. Her interest in machine embroidery started when she saw the machine at a store, and is both self-taught as well as via in-store service. She is now on her third machine! Faye Matson

Lori Miller (Le Claire, Iowa) has worked as a fiber collage artist for over 21 years and now shows and sells her work at exhibitions and galleries. She creates these fiber and recycled zipper pins whenever she is not able to work in her studio. She feels a responsibility to manage waste and upcycle whenever possible and often takes and repurposes unwanted materials from other fiber artists. She has fun making the zippy pins, and they also help her explore new ideas and concepts that she develops in her other fiber art work.

Richard Moody

With a double Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Latin, Lisa Murray (Sumter, South Carolina) is a story teller and a spinner of yarns – both literally and figuratively! After 30+ years in the healthcare industry as well as operating a horse breeding and showing facility, Lisa turned her Ruby Slippers Studio into a full-time operation. In 2017, she relocated from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, to South Carolina. Her work is about whimsy, contrasts, pop and geek culture, and impossibilities. Color and texture are the primary characteristics, bold and eye-catching… not for the shy. The creative process allows her to put her interpretations in a multi-dimensional medium.

Diane Muse

Melissa Nellis (Stillwater, Minnesota) is an art quilter whose work is inspired by the north woods of Minnesota and her Finnish heritage. Designing with fabric, thread, and yarns has been the mainstay of her work. Always with an eye for new ideas, she happened upon a fish leather vendor and purchased several salmon 'fillets.' In need of a new small card wallet that wouldn’t wear out as quickly as a fabric one, she began stitching various styles using salmon leather. She became hooked on fish leather as a medium for ultra-thin, durable card and cash wallets that fit discretely in your pocket.

Naomi Nelson

Iris folding is a paper craft technique that involves folding strips of colored paper to form a design, and the center of the design forms a shape similar to the iris diaphragm of a camera lens. Twin-cities based Joan Neudecker learned this art from her sister Maggie. Maggie started in 1997, learning from a book she got at her daughter’s scrap booking store. Maggie soon taught Joan, and together they made cards, until Maggie became blind in 2012. Joan has continued making, finding joy, fun, and challenge in the art, as well as a use for gum wrappers, candy wrappers, and wrapping paper!

Joan Neudecker

Laura Foster Nicholson (New Harmony, Indiana) is a textile artist known for her hand-woven tapestries. With a BFA from Kansas City Art Institute & an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, she has lectured, taught, and exhibited widely. Laura's artwork is in several museum collections, including Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, and Archives of the Venice Biennale.

Laura Foster Nicholson

Rachel Obermoller (Saint Paul, Minnesota) is a pilot by profession, and the methodical and technical skills of her day job are balanced by more creative pursuits as she creates art in her east side St. Paul home. Rachel utilizes pre-loved and repurposed materials like wool and denim whenever possible to create functional, sustainable home goods and holiday ornaments under the business Redeemed Goods. Rachel Obermoller

Suzanne O'Brien's (New Richmond, Wisconsin) art is inspired by nature, travel, and an interest in abstract and modern art. Her artistic study and practice have been life-long pursuits including formal education and workshops with national and internationally known artists. She designs and creates functional art pieces including wearables, accessories and home décor with materials that include repurposed, hand dyed, painted, and screen-printed textiles. Suzanne O’Brien

Born on the Iron Range of northern Minnesota, Brenda Oseland (Stillwater, Minnesota), is of Finnish descent and proud of her lifelong love of sauna. Her mother wove rag rugs on a handmade loom, and Brenda began her love of the fiber arts by sewing carpet rag strips for her mother's creations. Recently, her love of textiles and her heritage merged into her line of screen printed dishtowels, named Minnesota Maker. She designs her towels with her Minnesota/Finnish roots in mind and prints them in her home studio. A good play on words or visual pun on a functional item makes her happy.

Brenda Oseland

Sarah Peterson and Debbie Johnson (Twin Cities, Minnesota) have recently teamed their talents to create whisk brooms from broomcorn. They are both Textile Center staff members, so be sure to say hello if you see them in the Shop!

Sarah Peterson is a long time fiber artist, living in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her fiber journey includes aspects of weaving, dyeing, cross stitch, embroidery, traditional ink making, book arts, and all things paper. More recently, her exploration has taken her into the world of basketry, both traditional and non-traditional. Sarah currently serves on the MN Basket Weavers Guild Board.

Twin Cities-based fiber artist Debbie Johnson emigrated from Canada in 1996, bringing with her a passion for creating, sewing, quilting, stitching, and crochet along with a love of nature. While living in Duluth, she was introduced to basket making and has studied throughout the US, including with Bill & Ann Smith, Sue Williams, and influences of Leon Niehues. She has taught basketry since 2001 and is a current teaching artist at Textile Center. Debbie currently serves the MN Basket Weavers Guild as President and the National Basketry Organization on the Guilds and Groups Committee, and Teachers Group.

Marjorie Durko Puryear (Saint Paul, Minnesota), is an Emeritus Professor from the University of Massachusetts. Marjorie Durko Puryear

Wendy Richardson (Brooklyn Park, Minnesota) began making clothes at a young age, then moved on to quiltmaking, artwear, and home decor. With a desire to create a more sophisticated and personal color palette, she began studying textile dyeing techniques, becoming “seduced by color.” Wendy is known for bringing new life to vintage textiles and linens with her overdyed colors, as well as items made from sustainable fibers, such as bamboo socks. Taking into consideration sustainability, the history of textiles, and color and design theory, Wendy's work brings the joy of color into the home. Wendy Richardson's work is displayed in many business around the Twin Cities and is a part of several private and museum collections, including the Minnesota Historical Society. Her work is frequently included in national and international quilt shows and publications.

Robyne Robinson’s passion for the arts and love of travel initially inspired her to launch Rox Minneapolis Jewelry. She designs her contemporary, globally-influenced jewelry line using natural materials, semi-precious gemstones, and artisan metals from Africa, Central Asia, and the Middle East. Each piece is individually designed and hand crafted. Rox Minneapolis Jewelry has been featured in magazine editorials and fashion shows, including New York Fashion Week, and is sold in boutiques and museums worldwide.

Robyne Robinson

Miranda Rosa (My Bit of Wonder - Crystal, Minnesota) creates patchwork quilted home goods and accessories, her work reflecting her love of color, contrast and cats! She loves to put together small fabric pieces in an improvisational way – no patterns or even plans – and she threw out most of the quilting rules years ago. She believes that practical things you use every day can be beautiful and bring joy. She’s been sewing since she was 9 for the 4-H Fashion Show, and now, more than 30 years later, quilting is her career.

Miranda Rosa

Elena Rosenberg is a Scarsdale, New York-based wearable fiber artist, designing and creating finely crafted, luxurious fashion accessories and jewelry. Each one-of-a-kind piece is hand-felted or hand-dyed in small quantities in her studio. She works almost exclusively with high quality natural materials including merino wool, silk, and fine cottons. Her NICHE award-winning designs have been featured in American Craft Council shows and other exhibitions.

Karen Searle (Saint Paul, Minnesota) retired from her publishing career in 1996 and made a seamless transition to artist, earning her MFA in 1999 with coursework in knitting and crochet. Her work focuses on 3-D crochet in wire, to build a form with subtle shaping. She often explores using other non-traditional materials in her work, including video tape and birch bark. Through her work, Karen wants to express feminist viewpoints through the medium of “women’s work.”

Karen Searle

Truth or Consequences, New Mexico-based fiber artist Rebecca Speakes’ career includes 30 years as a graphic designer, mostly as a self-employed freelancer. During this time she became familiar with methods of design, color theory, and repeating grid patterns. She has been a fiber artist since 1975 when she designed and crocheted clothes for herself. She searched for a different medium which would allow for greater design flexibility and found quilting. She has always loved color and shiny highlights, and utilizes foil stamping to add to the vibrant color of the batik fabrics she uses, and incorporates shapes from quilts as design motifs.

Rebecca Speakes

Founded in 2009 after Julie Steller (Minneapolis, Minnesota) bought a pair of wool sweater mittens from a fundraiser, fell in love with them, and decided to try her hand at making some; Steller Handcrafted Goods now produces mittens, hats, purses, bracelets, dog collars, and mitten-themed holiday decor. Steller’s products are made from old sweaters and other materials found at garage sales, estate sales, thrift stores, and antique shops.

Julie Steller

Theodore Stumpf (Saint Paul, Minnesota), was born on Halloween, so naturally costumes played a central role in his childhood. His mother taught him to sew when he was in elementary school on her aqua-blue Brother sewing machine. He discovered theater in his late teens and began creating costumes for local stage productions. In college, he studied all forms of fabric manipulation, including dyeing, patterning, construction, millinery, and design, and has been working professionally in the costume industry for 25 years. Theodore received the 2003, 2005, and 2006 Howard C. Payne Memorial Award for Innovation in Fiber from the Springwater Fiber Workshop in Washington, DC.

What began as a graduate school project has now resulted in his Artiste de Fibre line of signature zig zag vessels, made only from fabric and a lot of zig zag stitches of thread on the bias. His artist book provides the “how” behind the item. A relative’s gift of a wall covering made from vintage ties launched his creativity, and he added exquisite pillows and pouches from repurposed neckties into his Artiste de Fibre collection.

Bonnie Wedge

Laura Wennstrom (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is a multimedia artist working in two and three dimensional formats using quilting, found materials, color, and installation techniques. Her work has been exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions across the country.

Laura received her BA in Studio Art from North Park University in Chicago and an MFA in New Media from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Laura has a robust teaching practice and teaches classes to children and adults throughout the Twin Cities, including at Textile Center. Laura lives and works in Minneapolis with her husband and two young children.
