Learn to use felting needles to shape wool fibers into free-standing, solid felt sculpture. Topics include basic form-building, fine detailing, adding color, incorporating mixed media, and working with armatures. Class time will include daily demonstrations and one-on-one instruction and feedback with lots of hands-on work time. The goal of the week is to practice with new techniques for creative problem-solving–trying things out rather than completing one specific project, although students are welcome to come to class with an idea in mind. Go home with a handful of small samples, a ton of ideas, and at least the start of a project–since needle felting takes time! Materials fee of $75 materials fee, payable to the instructor at the start of the workshop, covers a kit made up of 1 lb of Natural Corriedale wool roving, 1.5 oz of colorful dyed Corriedale roving, ten felting needles, and a foam work surface. Multi-needle tools will be available for use.
This workshop is for beginning and intermediate students–those who’ve played around with needle felting and want to take it to the next level, as well as those who are new to the art form. If you’ve already done any needle felting you’ll be particularly delighted by Stephanie’s alternative approaches. Bring along a spirit of experimentation and play; needle felting is incredibly forgiving and changeable. Please note that needle felting involves repetitive, physical hand and arm exercise.
$75 materials fee, payable to the instructor at the start of the workshop.
