July 7 – August 27, 2016 • Joan Mondale Gallery • Opening Reception: July 14, 6-8 pm
I want to make a rug that absorbs people, I want them to have the impression that they are walking through my rug, feeling that they are here in Guatemala. This is my inspiration when I am making rugs, what I am doing when I am drawing, choosing my colors.” – Zoila Calgua Morales, artist
Featuring 6 vibrant contemporary works by the 6 textile artists of the Maya Women’s Rug Hooking Cooperative of Guatemala / Cooperative de Alfombras de Mujeres Maya en Guatemala, a program that encourages Maya women to produce innovative textiles combining the art of rug hooking with design elements and colors inspired by motifs from traditional, hand-woven Maya clothing. The rugs symbolize innovation, artistic endeavor, and economic empowerment.
