Colleen Kahn
Draw inspiration from vintage fashion treasures in the Goldstein Museum of Design’s collection to create your own one-of-a-kind garment. Study historic fashion pieces from the museum to learn interesting design details including unusual pleating styles, novel construction techniques, and innovative silhouettes. Build a paper pattern and muslin sample for your museum-inspired garment. Then cut, construct, fit, and finish your fashion garment with hands-on guidance from the instructor. Students should expect to do approximately 2 hours of homework each week.
The first meeting or two will be held at the Goldstein Museum, to closely study a group of pre-selected fashion treasures from the collection, followed by classroom time at Textile Center where participants will build their museum-inspired piece. A final show-and-tell meeting will be held at the Goldstein Museum in September for all participants to share their completed projects. This class is open to students who have a high degree of comfort working with commercially-available ready-made patterns.
