Braided laces and cords are everywhere: shoelaces, hoodie strings, bolo ties, bookmarks, lamp pull cords, and more. Why go with the “blah” mass-produced cords when there is a whole world of loop braiding to explore? Finger loop braiding is a specialized technique used for at least 2500 years to make durable lacing for clothing, as well as decorative drawstrings for pouches. In class, instructor Riley Kleve will teach students the basics and beyond of creating finger loop braids for use in everyday life. Bring in pair of shoes or another item with a cord that waiting to be jazzed up!
A materials fee of $10 is due to the instructor at the start of class and includes thread, aglets, clamps, glue, and a handout on braiding.

Riley Kleve (they/them) is a textile artist and educator creating collaborative work in community-led settings. Their work in weaving, hand spinning, and embroidery draws from history to create a queerer vision for the future of textiles. Riley is a 2024-2026 resident artisan at North House Folk School and a 2025 recipient of a Creative Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board.
