Explore the art of rug hooking by creating a small (6″ x 10″) impressionistic style landscape based on a photograph. Learn the single stitch used in rug hooking as well as strategies for how to design and create a hooked landscape, including how to differentiate foreground, midground, and background and how to scale elements in a photograph to meet the restrictions inherent in hooking fibers. Transfer your design onto linen and choose colors and textures of fibers to bring your hooked landscape to life. Learn the best way to approach starting a hooked rug and how to overcome typical beginner frustrations. While it is unlikely that students will complete their hooked landscape during class time, the instructor will provide detailed instructions for how to finish the rug and home. All levels welcome!
$15 materials fee, payable to the instructor at the start of class, includes printed patterns/instructions, wool for flowers and leaves, small painted vase, and mulch for the flower base.

Instructor Bio:
Linda Raether (she/her) has been hooking rugs in the traditional way for about 15 years. She is inspired by the natural environment and uses hook and fiber as if they were brushes and paint to help interpret her observations. In her art practice, Linda use photographs, sketches, and watercolor to help design the landscapes she hooks. While she has been teaching rug hooking classes for the last 3 years, she has also been teaching science courses at the local technical college for the last 8 years. Linda delights in introducing people to rug hooking and takes pride in helping beginners overcome barriers in the technique with careful watching and targeted advice.
