Explore the art of reverse appliqué and the many possibilities this technique opens up for creating texture on fabric surfaces. Learn how to stitch reverse appliqué on a sewing machine and experiment with how to build up layers of pattern and color in dynamic ways. This class is open to beginners who have some basic sewing machine skills (e.g. comfort threading your sewing machine) and can use scissors to create intricate shapes.

Instructor Bio:

Shug Munic (they/them) is a multimedia artist that uses traditional sewing, quilting and soft sculpture techniques to recontextualize themes of comfort, memory, and gender. They use found fabrics to investigate my relationship to desire and intimacy. The fabrics they reclaim have stains, stitches, and other marks that hold memory of their past lives. Shug thinks of intimacy both as a past experience and fantasy future. They relate to José Muños’ notion that “Queerness is an ideality. Put another way, we are not yet queer. We may never touch queerness but we can feel it. The future is queerness’ domain.” By materializing desire, Shug investigates the visual properties of what makes a queer object, and how this object can be felt.  sophiamunic.com
