4-week class
Alla Hale
Learn to knit while creating a handful of useful coasters. Learn how to hold and maneuver knitting needles, cast on stitches, knit with the knit stitch, and bind off. Progress through the purl stitch, basic increases and decreases, and cabling (for motivated students). Gain the foundational skills and vocabulary needed to knit many beautiful designs and forms in the future (beyond coasters!). This workshop is for true beginners, though intermediate knitters may also find benefit in learning and practicing new stitches. Participants must have dexterity in their hands to be able to knit, but Instructor will also discuss ergonomic modifications to make knitting easier. Open to crafters ages 9 years and up (youth crafters require a waiver to participate).
Materials fee of $25, payable to the instructor at the start of class, includes yarn and straight needles to complete several coasters. Circular needles can be purchased for an additional fee.
Instructor Bio:
Alla Hale (she/her) is a knitter based in St. Paul, Minnesota who uses fiber art to live into her core values of creativity and connection. Each piece she creates speak to the profound beauty of working with her hands, transforming raw materials into something functional, beautiful, or otherwise meaningful.
Alla sources her materials locally, partnering with local shepherds and foraging for dye plants in the Minnesota landscape. This practice roots her work in the community and the land, fostering a deep sense of connection to both. Teaching fiber art classes privately and with the Textile Center around the Twin Cities is an extension of this connection. Through her classes she share the skills and joy of knitting and other fiber arts, and occasionally painting, helping others discover the expressive power of fiber art.
As a practicing data scientist, Alla is captivated by the intricate designs that emerge from seemingly simple elements. The combinations of each stitch, stroke, data point, and raw material tells complex and harmonious stories.
Her work celebrates the interconnectedness of community, nature, and pattern seeking. It is her hope that each piece she creates and every class she teaches resonate with a sense of place and belonging, reflecting the rich tapestry of our shared human experience. @HarvestedHues on Instagram and Ravelry.
