No sewing machine, no problem! Learn to stitch by hand from instructor Riley Kleve in this introductory course. Students will start at the beginning with how to thread a needle and simple stitching to attach two pieces of fabric before taking on intermediate skills like needle-turned appliqué and reverse appliqué to add decorative elements to your notebook cover.
Choose from fabrics and threads provided by the instructor, or shop for the perfect colors in The Stashery — our secondhand supplies shop at Textile Center.
Learn how to create the perfect knot, why thread and scissors matter more than you’d think, and all of the other tips and tricks master sewists keep secret. At the end of class, students will have a notebook with a stylish handmade cover and will feel ready to take on more advanced hand stitching projects. Whether you’re a machine sewist looking to level up your hand stitching skills or dipping your toe into the world of sewing for the very first time, this class is for you!
About the instructor:
Riley Kleve (they/them) is a textile artist and educator creating collaborative work in community-led settings. Their work in weaving, hand spinning, and embroidery draws from history to create a queerer vision for the future of textiles. Riley is a 2024-2026 resident artisan at North House Folk School and a 2025 recipient of a Creative Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board.
