Explore one of the oldest fiber art forms in this special 5-day felted rug workshop with Guest Teaching Artist Flóra Carlile-Kovács. Drawing inspiration from the long-standing tradition of nomadic felted rugs that were produced by communities from Eastern Europe to Central Asia, and continue most prominently today in Krygyzstan, learn how to apply the ancient art of wet felting to create vibrant, contemporary floor coverings. Traditionally, nomadic rugs were gifted to a daughter from her mother or other relatives when she got married. Using ancient symbols, they felted their dreams, best wishes, and good luck for the young woman into a rug that stayed with her for the rest of her life.
Create your own felted rug (finished size approximately 3? x 5? or 90 x 150 cm) using Flóra’s special prefelt technique. Learn about various kinds of wool, approaches for color transitions, and construction techniques for shaping and controlling edges on a large rug. Explore design principles based on traditional folk and nomadic rug motifs and create your own powerful design, inspired by ancient symbols or from your own contemporary perspective. Basic understanding of wet felting is useful. Creating a wet felted rug requires stamina and that the maker is in good physical condition.
Materials fee: $80-$100 to cover all wool needed to create one rug, payable to the instructor at the time of class. Price range depends on wool selected and market availability.

Instructor Bio:
The award winner of several wearable art shows, Flóra Carlile-Kovács (she/her) is a professional felt artist born in Szeged, Hungary, now living and working in Seattle, WA. In her work she incorporates two bodies of knowledge, the nomadic traditions and the urban, modern style of feltmaking. Coming from the European tradition of craftsmanship and quality, she is constantly experimenting with ways to improve not only the visual artistic aspect of her work, but also its physical integrity as a functional object appropriate for everyday use. Her enthusiasm spans the miles as she leads two Felt Tours to Hungary each year. florafelts.com
