Alicia de la Cruz
This workshop introduces beadwork as an additive skill to embroidery and sewing. Working with seed beads around a central medallion on a stabilizer fabric, students will learn basic sewn-down bead embroidery techniques as they work toward completing a keychain medallion during class. Some hand sewing experience required, as beadwork requires fine motor skills and can be a difficult addition to incorporate with a needle and thread if participants can’t tie a knot, thread a needle, and wield it with at least a basic amount of authority! All supplies included.
Instructor Bio:
Alicia de la Cruz/Waabooz Beading has been beading since the age of seven, taught by her aunts and grandmother. In her beadwork, she honors the traditional floral motifs of Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe (enrolled) and Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe (descendant), innovating with aspects of modern identity. Her work can be found each year during Art-A-Whirl, in NE Minneapolis where she lives, and in Textile Center’s Artisan Shop. In 2026, she was accepted into SWAIA’s Santa Fe Indian Market, the largest and most prestigious Indian Art market in the world.
