Ready for a wardrobe refresh? Bring old garments, fabrics, and small home linens to Textile Center’s Community Dye Bath to overdye new life into them! We’re harvesting Japanese Indigo from Textile Center’s Dye Garden, combining fresh leaves with cold water to create beautiful robin’s egg and turquoise hues. There will be time and space for participants to experiment with resist tying techniques on their own before dyeing their items. All levels welcome.
Fresh Indigo is available in limited supply which requires labor and resource-intensive cultivation. Each registered participant may bring two small or one medium item to the event.
Small items include: a silk scrunchie, tie, bandana, or handkerchief; woolen socks (items which traditionally come in pairs count as one piece) or mittens; a woolen hat, such as a beanie/toque.
Medium items include: wearable clothing such as a tank top, shirt, light weight dress, or light weight pants.
We CANNOT dye large and extra large items such as bedding, blankets, tablecloths, etc.
FOR BEST RESULTS:
• Choose the right fiber
The fresh indigo dye process offers best results on protein-based fibers, such as wool and silk. Cotton and other cellulose-based items may result in a more green-based hue unless pre-treated with a soymilk binder (not included in this event). This dye bath technique is not compatible with synthetic fibers, such as acrylic, polyester, or elastane.
Need something to dye? A silk scarf add-on option is available in the drop-down menu below.
• Clean thoroughly
All garments or fabric must be thoroughly washed with soap and water at home before coming to the Community Dye Bath. Unwashed items may result in poor quality dye coverage.
Please select a registration time from the drop-down menu. If you’d like Textile Center to provide you with a silk dye blank, you must add that to your cart along with your class registration.
