Community Gallery
Opening Reception: Saturday, November 1, from 2 – 4 pm

Join us at Textile Center for an exhibit that features text as a symbolic and conceptual force in the work of Matthew Pawlowski, as he navigates loss, identity, and shared histories through his work.

Neitherness features Pawlowski’s explorations of the graphic presence of text as a central visual element in confronting themes of permanence and impermanence, survival and loss, and of queerness and mourning—which he says, “occupies a space between acceptance and otherness”. Focusing on LGBTQ+ history and culture, particularly the impacts of HIV/AIDS, along with his interest in the supernatural, Pawlowski creates works of surprising delicacy. Heavy threads are “embroidered” into paper in impeccably constructed compositions that combine interlacing, stitching, and text in a balance of fragility and density.
