Minnesota Quilters

Quilting for Others is the charity branch of Minnesota Quilters. Before COVID19 struck, we donated about two dozen quilts per year, most of them baby quilts. Once we started sheltering at home, things changed in many ways. We knew quilters wanted to sew, and we wanted to help them. We were cutting quilt kits at home from donated fabric and meeting in parking lots to swap kits for completed quilts. We wanted to do more, so we asked Minnesota Quilters if we could set up some tables outside of Recovery Church, located in Saint Paul. We put out the word we would be there at 11am on the first day. We arrived at 10:30 to find people waiting in their cars, eager to pick up more kits and drop off what they had sewn at home. 

Fast forward six years and we still meet every Wednesday at Recovery Church. Now we are inside (thank goodness!), have a core group of four, plus many volunteers. In fact, in 2025 we logged over 17,000 volunteer hours. We donated 409 baby/kids quilts to Minnesota Visiting Nurses and 209 twin quilts divided between Tubman Shelter, Vinland Center, and Brittney’s Place. Another 304 lap quilts were donated to Hennepin County Hospice Program and Regions Hospital. We donated 135 Christmas stockings to Catholic Charities and hundreds of placemats to St. Cloud Catholic Charities and Community Emergency Assistance programs in Brooklyn Center.  

 There are many steps involved in making a quilt: cutting the fabric, sewing, adding backing and batting, quilting the layers, and then finally, binding. At Quilting For Others, each step is done by many different people. Our motto is “You only have to do the part you enjoy!” That is why we do not have individual cards for the displayed quilts. There is a saying that quilting brings people together. Quilting for Others not only brings them together but gives them a chance to share friendship and the beautiful quilts they make, while providing warmth and an object of beauty to those in need.
