Minnesota Feltmakers Guild
Felted Rugs with Guest Teaching Artist Flóra Carlile-Kovács
In Kyrgyzstan, when a daughter marries, her mother and relatives would make her a rug. Using their ancient tribal symbols, they felted their best wishes into the rug that stayed with the daughter for the rest of her life. Textile Center of Minnesota hosted a 5-day Guest Teaching Artist Workshop in August of 2024 with Flóra, and several of our Guild members participated. During the workshop, Flóra shared the rich history and traditional nomadic felting techniques, which we used to create our own rugs. We learned about tribal designs, prefelt making and cutting, wool inlay methods, defining edges, and the handling and felting of this large project.
The Minnesota Feltmakers Guild’s goals are to promote felted fiber art, increase awareness of feltmaking, and offer a forum for feltmakers where information can be shared. For information on the Minnesota Feltmakers’ Guild, please email: mnfeltmakersguild@gmail.com
