CELEBRATING THE MIDWEST MACHINE KNITTERS’ COLLABORATIVE

Interested in machine knitting, but not sure where to start? Founded in 2011, the Midwest Machine Knitters’ Collaborative and its members have encouraged each other in the use of knitting machines for both functional work and art work. From garments to toys, to complex art projects, MMKC members have maintained a focus on collaboration, community, and education. Through monthly meetings, organized workshops, and knit-a-long events, the group fosters a creative environment for like-minded artists to learn the craft of machine knitting.

Their exhibit at Textile Center featured sweaters knit by guild members, using the Traveling Stitches pattern (by Susan Guagliumi) as the foundation. Variations included different yarns, stitch gauges, silhouettes, and styling details. The guild also worked collaboratively to create The Faces of Machine Knitting, where members contributed a knit face representing varied expressions and points of view, all sewn together into one large art work.
