January 4 – February 27, 2021

The Minneapolis Modern Quilt Guild was founded in 2010, at the emergence of the national modern quilt movement. Though Minneapolis is in our name, our members are from all over the Twin Cities metro region and beyond.

We are affiliated with The Modern Quilt Guild, an international organization of guilds and individual members.

The Modern Quilt Guild’s website describes modern quilts this way:

“Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. ‘Modern traditionalism’ or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting.”

Our guild welcomes all levels of quilters, from those who are just starting out, to advanced quilters with decades of experience. We have members who lean more modern, more contemporary, and more traditional, and they all have an important place in our community.

We meet the third Thursday of the month, currently on Zoom. At our meetings we host local and national speakers, have technique demonstrations or sew together, and always enjoy Show & Tell of members’ work.

We also meet throughout the year when we can for retreats, sew-ins or charity days. Our charity efforts have recently benefitted the Neighborhood House in Saint Paul, through donations of handmade quilts for their clients transitioning from homelessness.

For many years we have made the Textile Center home for our monthly meetings, and we are eager to return in person hopefully sometime in 2021!
