Ella Ramsey, Past Board President of Textile Center, Fabric Enthusiast

Everyone who knows Ella can tell you about her passion for fabric. During Textile Center’s recent tours to India and Japan, she acquired textiles that are now serving as her muse as she spends time at home workshop creating new garments.

“My inspiration comes from seeing a piece of fabric and thinking about what I can make out of it,” Ella says. “Instead of thinking first about the finished product, I like to see how the fabric guides my path.”

Using a Bernina serger and a vintage green Elna sewing machine, among others, she often creates multiple patterns simultaneously. “I often work on multiple projects at the same time, usually two or three. I look for ways to use the whole piece of cloth to avoid waste.”

She is now working on a piece for an upcoming Wearable Arts Midwest challenge.

“Now that I have more time to work, I am finishing projects and creating new ideas,” Ella says. “When I sew, I feel calmer. It is therapeutic.”
