Art Speaks: Contemporary Expressions of Zapotec Weaving and Dyeing with Porfirio Gutiérrez
In April 2024, Guest Teaching Artist Porfirio Gutiérrez shared his work and the significance of Zapotec weaving and dyeing traditions for his contemporary creative practice in a special hybrid Art Speaks talk.
In-person participants had an opportunity to meet Porfirio and see examples of his work during a show and tell following the presentation. Porfirio also had a small selection of his functional work for sale at Textile Center during this time.
Artist Bio:
Porfirio Gutiérrez is a Contemporary Zapotec American textile artist based in Ventura, California. He comes from a long line of traditional Zapotec weavers, and his art practice remains dedicated to the deep knowledge and spiritual dimensions of his ancestors. He uses traditional Zapotec knowledge of dyes and materials and reinterprets Zapotec weaving language to create pieces that speak to his creative vision of the complexity of the Americas.
