Art Speaks: Abduljabbar Khatri and Sufiyan Ismail Khatri
Guests joined artist and sashiko expert Atsushi Futatsuya for a special Art Speaks conversation about the significance of sashiko in Japan and what is missing when this artistically rich and distinctive form of stitching is introduced outside of its original cultural context. Atsushi shared his journey to sashiko as well as insight into his sold-out workshop at Textile Center.
Artist Bio:
Born as the third generation of a surviving sashiko family in Gifu prefecture, Atsushi Futatsuya grew up with sashiko surrounded by thread, needles, and lots of fabrics. He launched the “Sashi.Co” project with his mother, Keiko, who has over the thirty-year experience of sashiko stitching as a platform to introduce their masterful works. Starting in 2017, Atsushi introduced the beauty and philosophy of Sashiko to the world through his website and workshops as “Sashiko Story”.
