Learn the basics of card weaving by creating something functional AND fancy – shoelaces! In class, instructor Becky Barnes will cover some of the history of tablet weaving, its uses, types of cards/tablets, and how to read different pattern styles. Learn where to find online resources, color choice for the warp, how to warp the loom, how to thread and turn the cards, and troubleshooting common problems like “twist.”
Materials fee of $10, payable to the instructor at the start of class, will include handouts, a set of 2.5″ cards, 2 fishing spinners, 2 shoelace aglets, and a stick for pushing twist.
Instructor Bio:
Becky Barnes (she/her) grew up and attended school in Moorhead, MN and Fargo, ND. She graduated with her BS and MS in Biology, and moved to ND to work as a paleontologist for the ND Geological Survey. In 2025, she and her family made the decision to move back to Minnesota and currently reside in the Twin Cities area. She creates finished woodworking artwork, as well as tools for other makers, such as weaving shuttles, nalbinding needles, drop spindles, and more. Becky had many opportunities to work with fiber as a child – the women in her family were active in sewing, weaving, spinning, dyeing, felting and more. Her current tablet weaving obsession was one of those fateful moments of “Ugh – that trim is so expensive… I can make it!” which once again opened up the world of fiber arts.
