Proddy is a technique used in hand-hooking rugs to give a shaggy, three-dimensional texture. Short strips of wool, often cut in various shapes, are poked or prodded through a linen backing. Unlike the smooth finish resulting from hooked loops of fibers, proddy produces a fluffy, shaggy look.
In this class, students will hook and prod one six-inch poinsettia from various colors of red, pink, and white wool cloth. Students will hook the center of the flower and prod precut flower petals into the linen backing. Students can choose to finish their flower as a plant poke or a pin. Additional kits to make a poinsettia garland (7 flowers: 3 large, 4 small), or poinsettia bouquets (5 flowers; 3 large, 2 small) will be available to purchase. All skill levels are welcome!
A $25 materials fee, payable to the instructor at the start of class, will include proddy tools, rug hooks, scissors, 6-inch embroidery hoops, rulers, hot glue.
Instructor Bio:
Linda Raether (she/her) has been hooking rugs in the traditional way for about 15 years. She is inspired by the natural environment and uses hook and fiber as if they were brushes and paint to help interpret her observations. In her art practice, Linda use photographs, sketches, and watercolor to help design the landscapes she hooks. While she has been teaching rug hooking classes for the last 3 years, she has also been teaching science courses at the local technical college for the last 8 years. Linda delights in introducing people to rug hooking and takes pride in helping beginners overcome barriers in the technique with careful watching and targeted advice.
