Spanning from the Caspian Sea to the Carpathian Mountains, the Slavic world has a rich and dynamic history of craft embroidery practices, folk dress traditions, and creative rituals. Participants in this introductory course will have an opportunity to learn about some of the regional designs and histories of Slavic folk embroidery, experience a traditional Slavic tea service, and examine vibrant antique and archival textile samples of Slavic folk costumes. The tactile element of this course includes instruction in the basic-intermediate cross stitch technique fundamental to traditional Slavic embroidery.
A $20 materials fee is due to the instructor at the start of class and covers all craft materials necessary to enjoy the lesson (e.g. canvas materials, needles, threads, full-color pattern).
Instructor Bio:
Sarah Rosenthal is an craft artisan from Savage, Minnesota. Her primary creative occupation is Slavic folk embroidery, practicing traditional cross-stitch techniques, embracing archival research and elements of historical fashion, and honoring intersecting cultural heritages through craft. She has lived and studied in Ukraine, Russia, and Germany, which has underwritten her interest and expertise in Slavic and Eastern European folk culture and art. As a public librarian, she has been able to spread her expertise and passion around the Twin Cities through community education courses. She offers original designs, kits, and hand-made samples through Rysalka Studiya — an independent creative studio founded for the purpose of bringing historical folk fashions and techniques of the Slavic world to the modern stitcher.
