Create a lovely woven reed table basket that is versatile as kitchen counter storage for fruits and vegetables, baguette serving basket to pass around the dining table, or simply to collect what needs collecting. Learn how to lay out a basket base and weave the sides with start/stop weaving, how to lash on a basket rim and how to attach side handles. Special focus will be on making a perfectly spaced base while also creating a gentle oval shaped basket. Choose from a variety of colorful handcrafted leather handles to make yours a truly one-of-a-kind basket.

All levels welcome. Some basic basket weaving skills are helpful but not required. Basket weaving does require hand strength and dexterity including the ability to pinch/grasp materials as well as the ability to stand, sit, and bend for long periods. Basket weaving involves long periods of repetition (i.e. performing the same motion over and over).

$35 materials fee, payable to the instructor at the start of class, includes all supplies needed to make one basket.

Instructor Bio:

Gail Mollner (she/her) got bit by the basket weaving bug in 2018 when she took a willow basketry class taught by Jo Campbell Amsler. Since then, she has explored a variety of other materials for basket making, such as birch, cedar, pine needle and paper. Paper has been the latest obsession after discovering the art of Annetta Kraayeveld, Jackie Abrams, and Dorothy McGuinness. She continues to explore weaving materials and techniques by attending local and national basketry classes and retreats. She is a member of the Textile Center, the National Basketry Organization, and several basket weaving guilds.
