Join this guided open sewing time to explore body-positive, gender-affirming approaches for patching, mending, and altering clothing. Bring a garment from home which you would like to adjust, repair, or add flair to, and learn approachable sewing machine and hand-sewing techniques to customize your clothing in a way that feels comfortable and empowering. This class is open to beginners who have some basic sewing skills (e.g. comfort threading your sewing machine). Bring your sewing supplies and a garment from home that you want to switch up a bit.

Instructor Bio:

Shug Munic (they/them) is a multimedia artist that uses traditional sewing, quilting and soft sculpture techniques to recontextualize themes of comfort, memory, and gender. They use found fabrics to investigate my relationship to desire and intimacy. The fabrics they reclaim have stains, stitches, and other marks that hold memory of their past lives. Shug thinks of intimacy both as a past experience and fantasy future. They relate to José Muños’ notion that “Queerness is an ideality. Put another way, we are not yet queer. We may never touch queerness but we can feel it. The future is queerness’ domain.” By materializing desire, Shug investigates the visual properties of what makes a queer object, and how this object can be felt.  sophiamunic.com
