Explore new surface design possibilities by painting dyes directly onto silk fabric. Learn how to use gutta, a latex-based resist, to create motifs and patterns onto cloth then apply fiber reactive dyes to add color to your designs. With roots in batik from Indonesia and Serti dyeing from France, resist and direct dye painting onto silk can allow for a range of painterly expressions on cloth–from the precision of line drawing to the atmospheric effect of watercolor. Gain insight into all steps involved in resist and direct dye painting onto silk including how to prepare the dyes and fabric, draw designs and patterns onto cloth, apply the resist and dyes, and set the cloth through steaming. All levels welcome.
$45 materials fee, payable to the instructor at the start of class, covers all necessary supplies and materials.
Instructor Bio:
Walia Hasan (she/her) is a fiber artist who has been sewing, embroidering, crocheting, knitting, and creating macramé since she was a young child. She began her exploration of silk painting two years ago and hasn’t looked back! Walia enjoys the unique vibrancy of silk and the magical way that the dyes blend with fabric. She has lived and worked all over the world and studied silk painting and batik in Indonesia. Walia’s training as an engineer has given her unique insight into silk painting and allowed her to understand the chemistry behind dyeing. In addition to selling her silk creations at local venues such as Art Dock 5 and the Minnehaha Art Fair, Walia is experimenting with fusing silk with felt and learning silk screening.
