Don’t let the name fool you — Victorian embroidery is not just the fine silk and linen handwork that graced elite British homes of the 19th century. In fact, charming, embroidered items were created and used throughout the Victorian period, by families of modest means and using humble materials such as scraps of mattress ticking. Learn 5 stitches used to embellish Victorian household items: herringbone stitch, chain stitch, buttonhole stitch, Cretan stitch, and “star” stitch. These are many of the same embroidery stitches as crazy quilting without the fabric piecing part! Learn how to couch ribbon or cord to a foundation and discuss finding needlework techniques in historic sources. Suitable for beginners as well as more experienced stitchers who are interested in unusual embroidery styles.

Instructor Bio:
Peg Deppe learned to embroider and crochet at an early age, and in college she became interested in ethnic and historic costume and related needle arts. Currently a freelance dress and textiles instructor and scholar, Peg has traveled to England, Turkey, Egypt, and Morocco to pursue her studies. She holds graduate degrees (MS, PhD) in textile history and dress ethnography from the College of Design at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
