Animals appear frequently in Jacobean Crewel embroidery. From rabbits to deer to squirrels to birds, embroidered depictions of animals not only add charm to Jacobean Crewel but help enliven the tree-of-life theme that pervades much of this embroidery tradition. In this series, learn to create a menagerie of Crewel-inspired animals using several stitches popular in Jacobean Crewel as well as designs adapted from historical sources. Participants can take just one class or all of the classes in the series. Open to advanced beginners who have some experience with Crewel embroidery.

March 10 and 17 will focus on Deer. Some of the most common animals seen in early Crewel work are deer and stags. The deer includes several stitches including long and short with direction changes, burden stitch, trellis filling, pearl stitch and fishbone stitch. This project is suitable for beginners as well as more advanced stitchers.

A materials fee of $15 is due to the instructor at the start of class and covers all supplies needed to make the in-class project.
