Excited for warmer weather and fresh produce? Learn to weave a useful leather handled shopping basket to hold your farmer’s market finds! Learn basic over/under start-stop weaving, while paying attention to shaping the basket as you weave up the sides. Learn how to lash on a rim, to attach the leather handles, and to add color overlays. Students will be able to choose from several color options. The instructor will also give a brief history of basketry and how to apply techniques learned in the workshop to weave baskets out of other materials. All levels welcome. Some basic basket weaving skills are helpful but not required. Basket weaving requires hand strength and dexterity including the ability to pinch/grasp materials as well as the ability to stand, sit, and bend for long periods, often working with repetitive motions (i.e. performing the same motion over and over).

Instructor Bio:

Gail Mollner (she/her) got bit by the basket weaving bug in 2018 when she took a willow basketry class taught by Jo Campbell Amsler. Since then, she has explored a variety of other materials for basket making, such as birch, cedar, pine needle and paper. Paper has been the latest obsession after discovering the art of Annetta Kraayeveld, Jackie Abrams, and Dorothy McGuinness. She continues to explore weaving materials and techniques by attending local and national basketry classes and retreats. She is a member of the Textile Center, the National Basketry Organization, and several basket weaving guilds.

$45 materials fee is due to the instructor at the start of class and covers all materials needed to create one basket.
