Sandra Brick
Learn two resist dyeing techniques — Itajime and Arashi– with roots in the Japanese textile arts of Shibori. Create bold geometric designs that are the hallmark of Itajime (“board resist”) by pleating, folding, and clamping shapes between two pieces of wood. Create “storm like” Arashi patterns by wrapping fabric around a pole, scrunching it into small pleats, and binding it with rope. Learn about the history of Shibori, immersion and direct application dyeing methods, and how dyes will respond differently on silk and cotton fabrics. Leave class with samples for both Itajime and Arashi as well as the confidence to incorporate these techniques into your fabric dyeing projects in the future. Perfect for beginners.
