Animals appear frequently in Jacobean Crewel embroidery. From rabbits to deer to squirrels to birds, embroidered depictions of animals not only add charm to Jacobean Crewel but help enliven the tree-of-life theme that pervades much of this embroidery tradition. In this series, learn to create a menagerie of Crewel-inspired animals using several stitches popular in Jacobean Crewel as well as designs adapted from historical sources. Participants can take just one class or all of the classes in the series. Open to advanced beginners who have some experience with Crewel embroidery.
January 14 and 21 will focus on the Snail. Elizabethan and Jacobean embroiderers did not shy away from snails, slugs, or bugs. The snail incorporates 14 different stitches, long and short (a very commonly used stitch), heavy chain, whipped chain, trellis, brick filling, several types of buttonhole stitch and blanket stitch. This project is suitable for beginners as well as more advanced stitchers.
