Peg Deppe
Don’t let the name fool you–Victorian embroidery is not just the fine silk and linen handwork that graced elite British homes of the 19th century. In fact, charming, embroidered items were created and used throughout the Victorian period, by families of modest means and using humble materials such as scraps of mattress ticking. Learn 5 stitches used to embellish Victorian household items: herringbone stitch, chain stitch, buttonhole stitch, Cretan stitch, and “star” stitch. These are many of the same embroidery stitches as crazy quilting without the fabric piecing part! Learn how to couch ribbon or cord to a foundation and discuss finding needlework techniques in historic sources. Suitable for beginners as well as more experienced stitchers who are interested in unusual embroidery styles.
Materials fee is $10, payable to instructor at the time of class.
