Are you interesting in experimenting with new techniques for making marks on fabric? Would you like to include more text in your textile art projects? This class is for you! Learn to incorporate text and freehand drawing into your textile art using rubber stamps, a typewriter, and a stylus. Learn techniques for typing on fabric and build a vocabulary of marks including expressive marks, linework, patterns, and lettering on cotton muslin. Create a sampler book featuring different drawing, stamping, and typing techniques as well as a set of reference swatches for testing wash and light fastness. Incorporate these techniques of stamping, sketching, and typing into future fiber-based projects and works of art. Come ready to experiment and play! This class is great for beginners. Materials fee of $30, payable to instructor at time of class.

Instructor Bio:

India Johnson (b. 1992, she/her) makes sculptures, installations, and participatory projects for churches and libraries. Her fine artwork, which is often executed in typewriter on fabric, associates textiles with formal practices for organizing information. India attended fine bookbinding school at the LLOTJA Book Arts Conservatory in Barcelona, and received an MFA from the University of Iowa Center for the Book in 2020. She is a founding member of LGBTQ Iowa Archives Library in Iowa City. As a teaching artist, India develops playful workshops that dwell at the intersection of book art and textile art. Within the US, she has taught workshops in Iowa and Utah; abroad, she has taught in Oaxaca and Mexico City. indiajohnson.hotglue.me/textual
