Silk Shading • July 7
Adult, Adult Classes, Featured Class
Wednesday, July 7, 6 – 9 pm
Silk shading, the art of embroidering natural looking motifs, goes by many names- needle painting, thread painting, and natural shading. Realistically embroidered flowers, birds, butterflies, and animals are beautiful–and possible with the use of shading techniques in your stitched work! Join us for a beginning-level workshop to learn the important stitches used for shading techniques, including satin stitch, long and short stitched, tapestry, how to “pad” stitches, and useful stitches to use for finishing a project. This class is intended as a stepping stone to future classes in silk shading, so jump in to work on a shading sampler and boost your toolkit of stitching techniques! Materials fee $10, payable to the instructor.

James Morehouse has been embroidering for about 50 years, starting as a teenager. He studied at the Royal School of Needlework in London where he earned his certificate in technical hand embroidery. Jacobean crewel, silk shading, and gold work are his main areas of interest, and he enjoys creating traditional designs for church use and for pleasure. Morehouse’s embroideries have won blue ribbons and sweepstakes at the Minnesota State Fair.
