Join us for a special 3-day workshop to explore the rich tradition of kawandi or quilt making in the Siddi tradition. The Siddis are a marginalized community living in the state of Karnataka in Southern India, who originally descended from the Bantu tribe of East Africa. They are renowned throughout the world for their colorful, abstract quilts made from old clothing and repurposed scraps of textiles. Created in community by Siddi women, these quilts are heirloom objects that hold memories and histories embedded in old pieces of cloth. Explore the Siddi kawandi tradition and stitching style. Learn compositional strategies that make these quilts unique including how to mix and layer different colors and patterns. Create your own Siddi style mini quilt using hand-stitching, applique, folding, and quilting techniques. All levels welcome.
This workshop is made possible through a collaboration with Khazana Art and Textiles, a woman-owned boutique, gallery, and community gathering space in Minneapolis. www.khazana.com
