Join us in welcoming Wendy Weiss for a special Guest Teaching Artist workshop on warp ikat dyeing with natural plant dyes in collaboration with the Weavers Guild of Minnesota. The first three days of the workshop (tying and dyeing) will be held at Textile Center, followed by two days at the Weavers Guild (warping and weaving). Learn the warp ikat process including creating a design plan and techniques for warp winding and binding. Develop a selection of immersion dye colors using natural plant materials gathered from the instructor’s garden and Textile Center’s Garden To Dye For, as well as other sources. Learn to treat, mordant, and dye bound warps in preparation for weaving.

Then, dress the loom, warping from back to front. Explore weave structures for warp ikat to maximize design of woven fabric including sett and threading. Learn about the historically and culturally rich practice of warp ikat dyeing and weaving in a collaborative, community environment under the guidance of an expert artist working in these traditions. All levels are invited to join this class, as the entire weaving and dye process will be covered, from start to finish. Some weaving experience and familiarity with basic weaving terminology is helpful.

Students will weave on table or floor looms. Students are welcome to provide their own loom or use one of the Guild’s looms. Students who choose to use a Guild loom will have an additional week after the workshop ends to finish weaving their project. Please email education@weaversguildmn.org with your preference. If you plan to use your own loom, please include the brand name and model of the loom you will be bringing.

$70 materials fee, payable to the instructor at the start of the workshop.
