Jae Veenstra
Create a coaster with ramie fabric (moshi) using the art of Korean patchwork known as jogakbo. With ancient roots in the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), jogakbo is a technique of reusing scrap fabric by creating intricate patchwork patterns from squares and rectangles. Jogakbo continues to be a vibrant hand-stitching tradition today and is particularly popular as a way to slow down, find mindfulness, and create beauty from old things. Learn the basic stitches of jogakbo by making a square coaster. Gain insight into skills needed to make larger patchwork wrapping cloths (known as bojagi or pojagi). Great for beginners! No previous experience is required.
Materials fee is $20, payable to instructor at the time of class, and includes all supplies needed for this class.
Instructor Bio:
Jae Veenstra is a designer, fiber artist, and mother who is passionate about hand-stitching. Jae worked as a graphic designer and art director for over 10 years in South Korea before moving to the United States where she has continued her creative pursuits, most recently through coursework for a Master of Fine Arts at MCAD. While in South Korea, Jae studied traditional patchwork from Aeh-Kyeong Kim, the Korean master of Gyubang craft, Jogakbo. Jae is particularly inspired by the way that hand-stitching can help create calm, mindfulness, and peace in our otherwise busy lives.
