For those who have tried Joomchi, this next-level class engages students in a deeper understanding of the possibilities for working with Hanji papers. The class will cover variations of the joomchi process–such as woven joomchi, holes in layers, and working sculpturally. Joomchi, a process of using Hanji (mulberry papers) layered and bonded through kneading, produces a strong, malleable surface that can be used in sculpture, collage, clothing, and as a substrate for stitching and embellishment. Some previous experience is necessary, and students need to bring an existing joomchi for repurposing during class. Materials fee is $15, payable to the instructor at the time of class.

Instructor Bio:
Karen Searle’s artwork, combining needlework and mixed media, has been exhibited internationally. She began teaching at the Weavers Guild of Minnesota in 1972 and has taught at St. Catherine University, Canberra School of Art, Australia, and numerous conferences and symposia. Following a career as publisher and author of textile books, Searle has written for several crafts publications in the US, Europe, and Korea. She has had artist residencies at the Mendocino Art Center, CA, and New York Mills Art Center, MN, and has mentored emerging artists since 1991. Withdrawal Policy
If you need to withdraw from class and you send a withdrawal request at least 5 business days before the start of your workshop, you may receive a refund (minus a $25 processing fee). Alternatively, you may transfer your full tuition to another currently listed class or convert your full tuition into a tax-deductible donation to Textile Center.
We are unable to provide a refund or make a tuition transfer if your notice of withdrawal is received less than 5 business days before the start of your workshop, except in the case of illness or health risk (please see COVID-19 tuition transfer policy here). In this case, your tuition can be converted to a tax-deductible donation to Textile Center. We will be happy to provide you with a receipt for your donation if you request one.
