Class Description:
Geared for beginners, this 8-week class explores personal expression through the medium of embroidery, and examine the history of embroidery as well as the exciting contemporary work being created by artists like Mary Bero, Michelle Kingdom, and Tom Lundberg. You will learn basic stitches and techniques as you build a sample book to build your stitch vocabulary, as well as experiment with non-traditional threads and fabrics. As you work to design and complete a finished project, you will have the opportunity to explore your own area of interest, utilizing the resources in Textile Center’s Library to further develop stitch techniques and design sensibility. As a group, the class will plan and install an exhibition of finished work in Textile Center’s Library Gallery. This culminating event will be a public reception where workshop attendees will share their artwork and experiences with friends, family, and the community.

Instructor Bio:
Susan grew up in Minnesota and Wisconsin and worked as an elementary teacher. Throughout her life, she always had some sort of sewing or needlework project going. A move to Virginia, a place filled with the influence of history and colonial craft, had an influence on her and led her to weaving and spinning. She took a leap from teaching to learning, and returned to school to study textiles at Virginia Commonwealth University. Finding weaving too structured, she began to work primarily in embroidery, which she continues to work in today. Process, material, and design influence her work, along with enjoying the mystery of creating and trusting it will all come together in the end. Her work has been exhibited in numerous regional and national juried shows, including Through the Needle’s Eye, a 2-year traveling show sponsored by the Embroidery Guild of America. Her work is found online on her blog – www.threadsofinspiration.net, her Etsy site – www.threadsofinspiration.etsy.com and Threads of Inspiration on Facebook. Her return to teaching adults focuses on classes in surface embroidery, from the basics to more complex stumpwork projects. Forming relationships with students and watching their skills and ideas grow are joys she finds in teaching.
