Saturdays, March 16 & 23, 10 am – 3 pm

2 week class

Sandra Brick and Rose Allen

In this two-session, team-taught class, learn to dye your own cotton fabric with MX Procion Dyes, and then use that fabric to create a basic quilt block. In the first session, explore color theory and strategies for dyeing and overdyeing cotton fabric. Experiment in the Dye Lab to create a few fat quarters of fabric for use in the second session to make half square triangles and an hourglass block. Gain insight into quilting fundamentals including playing with layout, learning how to use basic tools, sewing a scant seam (1/4″) to construct a quilt block (either 18″ or 20″ square), and finishing a quilt top.

Cotton for dyeing and a selection of MX Procion Dyes will be provided for students to use during the first class. Students may wish to purchase coordinating fabric during the weeks in between the first and second sessions to use in their quilt blocks (or can plan to dye their own!). For the second session, students must bring a sewing machine, in good working condition, to class and be able to operate it with basic sewing ability. This class is open to all – including both beginner and advanced dyers and quilters!
