Wednesdays, December 6 & 13, 12 – 1:30 pm

The Rev. Karen Mosso

Are you interested in learning how to make a liturgical vestment or understanding more about this rich textile tradition? Making vestments is a way to creatively express a visual faith message and be good stewards of resources. Join this “show and tell” workshop to learn strategies for how to design and make vestments that fit and convey a desired message through use of color, symbols, fabric and other materials. Learn how to choose appropriate fabric for vestments and tips for adding embellishments including repurposing existing materials. Gain insight into fitting and sewing techniques such as directional sewing and the importance of “turn of cloth.” Explore a diversity of liturgical examples and design strategies for making a visual impact. Participants are invited to bring works in progress for sewing tips and/or consultation. All faiths welcome.

This is a hybrid class (in-person OR virtual on Zoom).

Instructor Bio:

Karen has a BS in Home Economics Education and an MA in Art History which included doing her thesis on Contemporary Liturgical Needlework. Following her MA, she also attended seminary and is now a retired Episcopal Priest. Throughout her pastoral career, she has made and taught parishioners to design and make vestments, altar hangings and Communion bread. She once made 35 liturgical stoles for women in a three-year spirituality community. Karen loves to travel and brings home souvenirs of sock yarn or fabric. She was recently on a church mission trip to Uganda and coached young women in sewing projects using a treadle sewing machine as they have no electricity at home.
