Join us in welcoming Porfirio Gutiérrez to Textile Center for two special workshops on the weaving and dyeing traditions of Oaxaca.

Porfirio comes from the Zapotec weaving traditions and uses his work to communicate the deep spiritual dimensions and integrity of his ancestors. In this 3-day Cochineal Insect Dyeing workshop, Porfirio will share his knowledge of transforming nature into color. Learn how natural dye materials are informed by the soil, climate, water, heat and vessels they are dyed in. Explore the science and chemistry of the sacred cochineal insects, and how to manage the PH and acidity in the beautiful red hue they create.

Porfirio will lead participants through a step-by-step exploration of how to use Cochineal insects as dye, including extracting the maximum color possible, preparing the wool yarns to be dyed, dyeing and overdyeing processes, as well as finishing techniques needed to achieve an even, deep color. Porfirio will also devote time to share the spiritual understanding of cochineal insects and how this relates to color and ceremonies in his native Oaxaca. All levels welcome.

Materials fee is $40, payable to the instructor at the time of class.
