Steve Pauling

Join us for a special lecture by Steve Pauling, a.k.a. the “Bobbin Doctor,” on A Brief History of the Sewing Machine (or “What you didn’t learn in school about sewing machines!”) and the popular resurgence of interest in vintage mechanical sewing machines. Despite the whiz-bang features of new computerized sewing machines, older mechanical machines have seen a resurgence of interest in recent years. In this lecture, the “Bobbin Doctor” will present a brief history of the sewing machine and explain many of the reasons why sewers are seeking out vintage machines. He will discuss the different major hook systems and why one might be better than another for different sewing applications… and your personality! Learn what to consider in purchasing an older machine and which types of machines are best suited for your particular sewing interests.

This special lecture is offered with an option to attend in-person at Textile Center or digitally, via Zoom.

  • Virtual/online via Zoom: $5
  • In-person: Pay-what-you-can – $10, $15, or $20. (If you have the capacity, please consider contributing more to sponsor those who need to pay less.)

In-person attendees are encouraged to bring their vintage mechanical machines for comments and feedback. Please indicate in the notes section during checkout if you would like to bring a vintage mechanical machine and which type of machine you would like to bring.
