Explore the vibrant and intricate embroidery styles from Zinacantán, a town in Chiapas, Mexico, known for its rich textile traditions. Learn the cultural significance of Zinacantán embroidery, including its use in traditional garments and ceremonies. Gain insight into the ornamental forms and stitches that characterize this style of embroidery including the floral chain stitch, petal stitches, and layered satin stitches, which, when used together, give Zinacantán designs their rich texture. Create your own Zinacantán-style embroidery inspired by the iconic designs of the region, while also incorporating contemporary and personal elements. All levels welcome. Basic embroidery skills (such as threading a needle and basic stitches) are helpful but not required.
Materials fee is $15 and is payable to the instructor at the time of class.

Instructor Bio:
Ivonne Yáñez (she/her/hers) is an interdisciplinary artist and fashion designer from Mexico City. She holds a bachelor’s degree in fashion design from Universidad del Valle de México and Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, Milan. In 2023, she graduated with an MFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Ivonne focuses on immersive installations and has exhibited solo shows at Rochester Art Center, Soovac, and Random Access Gallery in Syracuse, NY. She is currently an adjunct faculty member teaching installation at MCAD and works as a part-time educator at The Walker Art Center. ivonneyanez.com
