Chiaki O’Brien
Create a one-of-a-kind tote bag using Bengala mud dyes and stencils. Made in Japan, Bengala dyes are derived from soil, come in a variety of hues, and are environmentally safe and fun to use. Learn the history and cultural significance of this unique form of dyeing. Use one of the stencils from the instructor’s collection to adorn your tote bag. Learn how to convert Bengala mud dyes into paste, techniques for working with the stencils, and ways to set the dyes onto fabric. Participants are welcome to bring their favorite stencils from home to use during class. If there is time, participants can use Bengala dyes to adorn a light-colored t-shirt or piece of fabric brought from home, in addition to the tote bag. All levels and ages welcome! $15 materials fee, payable to the instructor at the start of class.
