Join us in welcoming Winnie van der Rijn to Textile Center for a special Guest Teaching Artist workshop. Utilizing a variety of mixed media applications, Winnie will guide participants in an expansive and improvisational approach to artmaking. Discuss and learn exercises of design opportunity, iteration, collaboration, deconstruction, artistic decision making and skill sharing. Participants in the workshop are encouraged to utilize their existing artistic skills — whether weaving, knitting, printing, sewing, painting, collaging, dyeing, etc. — and to bring a variety of different materials from home to use in a collaborative fashion on the creation of new work. The project and process for the workshop will be guided by the materials and skills that everyone brings to the table.
On the day after the workshop, Sunday, August 24, participants and other members of the public are invited to collaborate with Winnie on her ongoing work, “The Gossip Project: How to Play Well With Others” which brings together performance + community + participation + conversation + selective editing + embellished lipstick monoprints on vintage napkins. Participation in “The Gossip Project” is optional and asks participants to have one-on-one or small group conversations whilst wearing lipstick (provided by Winnie) and drinking staining beverages with the goal of staining the napkins. Photographs will be taken of willing participants’ lips. The stained napkins will be further embellished by participants through embroidery and stitching. All participants will be listed as contributors to “The Gossip Project.” Click here to register for The Gossip Project!

Instructor Bio:
Winnie van der Rijn is a multi-disciplinary artist of opportunity– collecting materials, experimenting with techniques and pursuing her curiosities. Her art practice includes textiles, sculpture, collage and collaboration (which she considers its own art form). She plays well with others. Winnie actively exhibits her work throughout the United States and internationally.
A lifelong learner, Winnie graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1989 with a BA in Sociology. She is constantly trying to reconcile her deeply feminist outlook and leftist Berkeley education with her military upbringing. She has studied printmaking, sculpture, metalsmithing and Marxist theory. In addition, Winnie has explored weaving, machine knitting, bookmaking, altars, exploding picture boxes, automata, shoe making, millinery, sewing, fusing, stamping, metal weaving, resin, riveting, precious metal clay and mixed media. She is wildly curious about how things are made.
Her recently completed project ‘How to Dismantle the Patriarchy’ has shown in various locations including the Textile Arts Center (Brooklyn, NY), Dairy Arts (Boulder, CO), Museum of Sonoma County (Santa Rosa, CA), The New Bauhaus (Iasi Romania), Austin Peay State University (Clarksville, TN) and the self-invented Museum of Natural Consequences (New York, NY). Winnie has completed residencies at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn, FabScrap in NYC, Chateau Orquevaux in France, and MASSMoCA in Massachusetts.
Winnie, a seventh generation Californian, is currently based in New York. She and her husband are redefining what it means to be empty nesters. winnievanderrijn.com @winnievanderrijn
