2021 A Common Thread Call for Entry

A Common Thread is an annual, non-juried exhibition that gives every member an opportunity to exhibit one of their recent textile works in Textile Center’s galleries.

To complete the Call for Entry:

1) DO THIS FIRST: Add the item to your shopping cart. (Your browser will keep you on this page until you complete the application.)

2) Fill out the application below.  (Do not go to the shopping cart before you fill out the application.)

3) Click SUBMIT at the bottom when you are done and wait patiently. When your application is completely uploaded, YOU WILL BE REDIRECTED by this system to the shopping cart to pay the entry fee. (That is how you know the upload has worked correctly.)

4) Make sure your membership is current!  If you are wondering. reach out to Madie Ley, mley@textilecentermn.org. You can add a new membership or renew by clicking HERE and adding it to your cart for checkout!

5) Your receipt for payment is your confirmation.

If you do not see the Common Thread Entry Fee in your shopping cart after you SUBMIT your application, then you may have forgotten to add it before you filled out the application. You can reload this page and add it, COMMON THREAD webpage, and then click on “Check Out” to pay–OR call Textile Center at 612-436-0464 and our staff can take your payment over the phone.

NOTE: There is an entry fee of $25 to help defray exhibition costs. Once you’ve clicked SUBMIT at the bottom of the form, you will be redirected to the shopping cart to complete payment. You will receive confirmations for BOTH the application and the payment via email.

Since this is our annual member’s show, you will be contacted if your membership has lapsed or if you need to join. Or, simply add your membership to the shopping cart before you check out by clicking on MEMBERSHIP. Your membership needs to be current on the opening day of the exhibition, July 6, 2021.

2021 Important Artist Information:

  • Work must be finished at the time of receipt of the application. The piece entered in the application will be the piece that will be exhibited at Textile Center.
  • Work must not have been made prior to 2019.
  • Piece submitted must be fiber art-related. The definition of fiber art, for the purposes of this exhibition, is art that is created using any materials, techniques, or sensibilities that are traditionally thought of as related to fiber. Materials can be natural or synthetic, and can include things such as plastic and metal. Examples of technique can include but are not limited to: weaving, quilting, knitting, sewing, dyeing, felting, stitching, needlework, lace making, basketry, beading, interlacing, knotting, crochet, surface design, printing. The work can be conceptual, functional, wearable, installation-based, sculptural, production oriented, craft, fine art, etc.
  • A high resolution photograph of the piece to be exhibited must accompany the application. File format: JPEG only. File dimensions: No smaller than 1920 pixels on the longest side. File resolution: AT LEAST 96 ppi/dpi (NEW standard web resolution). File size: 2 MB maximum. Most iPhones and smart phones can take photos at this resolution.
  • Maximum size for 2-dimensional pieces is a total perimeter measurement (around all sides of the piece) of no more than 144 inches, frame included. This must also include the space necessary between segments of diptychs or other multiple piece works.
  • For 3-dimensional pieces such as sculpture, the maximum size is 36 inches by 36 inches by 36 inches (or proportional- H x W x D added together cannot exceed 108″)
  • Garments and wearable art must be life-sized or smaller.
  • All hardware must be included. Framed work must have a hanging wire that does not show. All fabric pieces must have a hanging sleeve sewn in with a hanging stick that, assuming it is not featured as an element of the art, does not show beyond the sides of the piece. If a hanging wire is used, it must not extend above the top of the work.
  • All work requiring return shipment to artists by Textile Center requires a prepaid shipping label, included with reusable packing material for safe shipment.

Call for Entry- A Common Thread 2021

You must be a current member of Textile Center as of the opening date of the show, July 6, 2021, to exhibit your work in A Common Thread. If you are not currently a member, please become a new member or renew by visiting our Membership Page at www.textilecentermn.org/member/. (Please paste this link into a new browser window if you need to use it.)
Indicate that you agree with this statement by typing your initials in the box.
List the materials used to create your piece. Use a simple list format, for example: cotton thread, habotai silk, antique buttons, Mx dye. Do not list the processes or techniques in this section.
List the techniques you used to create your piece. Please use present tense, and use a simple list format, for example: hand embroidery, shibori dyeing, felting, machine sewing.
Please note: the maximum size allowed for 2-D pieces is 144"--total perimeter measurement--frame and space between segments included. 3-D piece maximum size is 36"x36"x36". Garments/wearable art should be life-sized or smaller.

LOAN AGREEMENT   

If the State Fair is held in 2022, your piece in this exhibition will be considered for Textile Center's annual curated exhibition in the Creative Activities Building at the 2022 Minnesota State Fair. I will loan my unsold work for this purpose should I be selected. More information will be provided after selections are made. NOTE: This is for the 2022 State Fair, not the 2021 State Fair
