Classes for Kids & Teens? Descriptions marked with a ** are open to kids or teens and require no previous experience. These are not kid's classes but rather beginner classes for all types of beginners. Young people will be challenged while curious adults will be inspired...and no one will be bored! Please see class description for ages. Other classes may allow older teen students with instructor permission. Please contact the Textile Center at 612-436-0464 for more information before you register.

All classes have limited space available and some fill quickly. Please feel free to call and check on class availability before you send in your registration. We are not able to hold spaces without payment. We will try to update this page when classes are full or with other corrections. If the class you are interested in is full, we are generally able to take a waiting list for a class and call will you if a space opens up.

Dyeing & Surface Design


Double Dyeing
Thursdays August 21 and 28

Dye it and dye it again! This class starts with simple shibori patterns you'll use to create four unique silk scarves with bold or subtle patterns and colors. Then, take it a step further as you dive in to overdyeing techniques for layering color and patterns one on top of the other. Giving your scarves a double dip lets you explore the question "what if?" What happens when you dye that blue and white scarf with red or green? This is your chance to find out. Learn how to layer transparent colors, how to use a little color theory and take time for some structured play with color and dye. Materials are included, but you may also bring a few fat quarters to further your explorations. Materials fee $40, payable to the instructor.

Shimmering Silk Scarves
Wednesdays October 15 & 22

What is the perfect accessory for a holiday party? A silk scarf fringed with beads! On the first night, you will dye two silk scarves in your choice of colors, while you learn some basic dye techniques. The next session will provide the opportunity to embellish the scarves with small sparkling glass beads using at least two different fringing techniques. A great combination of skills you can use for many projects. Supply list provided. Materials fee $15, payable to instructor at first class.

Basic Black: Recycle wool sweaters with Sabraset Dye
Friday October 31

Learn how to successfully immersion dye wool, using Sabraset dyes. Bring any color wool sweater, throw it in our vat of “simply the best” colorfast black dye and go home with a new black one for winter. Sabraset dyes are very concentrated, extremely colorfast and come in thirteen intermixable colors. Dye lab safety and instructions for making dye formulas based on weight of fiber will be covered, as well as other methods of using Sabraset dyes in every color on all of your wool creations. Materials fee $20.

Variations on a Theme: Shibori
Wednesday November 19

Transform simple silk scarves in to multicolored masterpieces in just one evening! Learn some simple shibori techniques - resist dying in the Japanese tradition, using folding, clamping, binding, stitching and more to create patterns in your fabric before you add the color. You will complete four different variations and leave with a bouquet of silk scarves that you can give as gifts or wear to brighten up your winter wardrobe. Materials fee $35.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to dye? Are you confused about all of the kinds of dye available? In this class you will learn a wealth of information on the fundamentals of dyeing. Professional dyer Marliss Jensen will cover fiber identification, different types of dyes and their uses, dye equipment, color charts, color matcing and how to obtain consistent results, as well as safety in the dye studio. Class handouts include a source list for materials and bibliography of reference books. Some small dyed samples wil be created in class. Dyers of levels are welcome. Felting

Frosty Felted Wool Snowmen
Thursday December 4

Start with fluffy white wool and end with a little snowman sure to make you smile. In this class, you will learn to make felted wool beads with the basics of wet felting. Great for holiday gifts and decorations! You will take home a finished snowman or two from this fun class. Materials fee $5. **Ages 10 and up welcome.

Knitting & Crochet

Design a Sweater
Tuesdays September 23, 30 & October 7

Have you looked through knitting patterns and never found the “perfect sweater”? You can design the sweater of your dreams! Raglan three-quarter length sleeves with an empire waist? Long tunic? Cropped cardigan? We will go through the whole process from design philosophy, to working out your idea, knitting swatches, planning and math. You will leave with a plan for your new sweater and the tools and experience to help you create more fantastic designs. Some knitting experience recommended. Students should plan a little time to knit at home each week. Supply list provided.

Knittin’ Mittens

Make cozy wool knitted mittens for yourself or a friend. This class will guide you through your mittens step by step - cuffs, thumb gusset, shaping the top - and all kinds of ways to customize the fit that’s perfect for your hands. You should know how to knit and purl, no experience with double-pointed needles is necessary. You can choose can make felted or regular mittens using 100% wool. Supply list provided.

Uncharted Territory: Knit & Crochet Vessels
Tuesdays December 2 & 9 and Thursdays December 4 & 11

Explore the sculptural potential in knitting and crochet for creating vessels and other sculptural forms. We will work with nontraditional materials, simple stitches, and combinations of the two techniques to design and ‘build' forms. Examples of work by a variety of artists will provide inspiration, and an ongoing discussion will explore process and meaning. Students should  have a basic knowledge of knitting or crochet. Instructor will supply some  tools, nontraditional fibers and wire.  Materials fee $15, payable to the instructor at first class session. Students should bring an assortment of some interesting materials such as novelty yarn, flexible wire, cording, raffia, fabric strips.

Beginning Bobbin Lace

Learn the basics of creating intricate bobbin lace - a beautiful traditional art form. You will make your own bobbins and lace pillow or you can use equipment provided by the instructor. The basics of making a simple piece of bobbin lace will be covered - from preparation of patterns and bobbins to learning the movements and stitches to finishing your piece. No knowledge of lace making required. Simple patterns will be completed in class and you will leave with several samples. Materials fee $15 ($30 deposit for use of instructors tools, optional)

Embellished Felted Beads

Give your felted wool beads some personality! We will start with pre-felted wool beads and then add embroidery, stitch on sparkling beads and more. Embellished felted beads make unique jewelry, fabulous ornaments, one of a kind buttons or fun 3-D art. Learn a collection of techniques and tips to make your beads into works of art. Pre-felted beads and other supplies will be provided by the instructor. You can also bring your collection of felted wool beads or make some in our Felted Snowman class (Dec 4)! Supply list provided. Open Studios

Marbling Open Studio
Friday September 19

A day of creative marbling in the dye lab! This open studio time provides you with the workspace and many marbling tools, accompanied by expert advice and troubleshooting. Bring your prepared fabric or paper and paints and you can jump in and start working. Some marbling experience necessary, formal instruction will not be provided. Studio fee of $20 includes prepared carageenan tank, alum for paper and use of many combs, tools and equipment. Studio will be open from 10-4 and you can use your time however you like- take a long lunch, only come for a few hours or work through every minute. Please wear old clothing and comfortable non-slip shoes since you will be standing while marbling. Space is limited to 8 students per session, please register early. Supply list/preparation instructions.

Dye Lab Thursdays & Fridays
Thursdays and Fridays, starting September 11 10:30 am - 4:30 pm

Work in the Textile Center Dye Lab with Artist in Residence Candy Kuehn. The Dye Lab is open every Thursday and Friday* from 10:30-4:30 for open studio time. No formal instruction will be provided, but Candy will guide and inspire you through dyeing your first project, exploring color and design or crafting a work of art.

You set the schedule. You can purchase a punch card, redeemable for hours during Dye Lab Thursdays & Fridays - each punch ($20) is good for 3 hours in the dye lab. Use your hours in any way that you choose - come for 6 hours on 1 day, come for just the morning or afternoon, or come for a few hours every Friday. Punch cards are available in the Textile Center Shop.

Design your project. Dyes and chemicals will be provided, you should bring fabric that you would like to dye. If you have questions about a particular project, please call during Dye Lab Hours on Thursdays or Fridays to speak to Candy.

Sewing

PajamaRama (for Grown-ups!)

Our most popular kids summer camp is now a class for adults too! In this “grown-ups-only” class, you can act like a kid again. On the first night, you will dye your fabric in any colors you choose. We start with plain cotton and make it something extraordinary! Come back the next week and learn to make simple pajama pants. Customize yours with a few different waistband options, pockets and more. No sewing experience necessary. Supply list provided. Materials fee $15.

Bring your cup-o-joe and your creative energy! Learn simple fiber art techniques like embroidery, beading, simple dying and more to make small gifts and miniature pieces of art to decorate your home or give as gifts. We will work with cotton and wool, beads and ribbons, sewing and felting. October is all about animals with handmade toys for your pet or animal themed gifts. November is picture frames and photo hangers. December brings us garlands and ornaments as holiday decorations. Materials fee $10 for each session.

B is for Beginning Quilting

New baby in the family? Kid going off to college? Have a friend who needs a special gift? Learn to sew (or start sewing again) while you make your first quilt. In this hands-on class you will walk step-by-step through how to make a small quilt. Learn tips for cutting and piecing your blocks, basting, quilting or tying and finally binding the edges. Please bring your sewing machine in good working order. There will be homework between the two sessions. No experience necessary. Supply list provided.

Down & Dirty Pattern Drafting

We will start out with an overview of the basics of pattern making. Then you will learn to measure, draft and fit a basic skirt pattern to fit your shape. There will be a little homework between sessions. Throughout the class, you will learn a large number of quick tricks, when it is possible to cheat and when you really have to do things the hard way. After taking this class, you will know enough to be dangerous, and feel confident to be the boss of your own pattern. You should have some sewing experience. Supply list provided.

Self-Mitered Corners

This hands-on class will take the mystery out of making self-mitered corners – an easy way to add a professional looking finished hem to napkins, table cloths, quilts, even garments. This is a great way to use up your odd yardages of fabric. A set of custom napkins makes for a great host/hostess gift, make colorful cloths that you can wrap around a house warming gift and then use again as a kitchen towel. Steve “Bobbin Doctor” Pauling will demonstrate the technique of making self-mitered corners, including how to miter odd angled corners. Bring your sewing machine and supplies for making samples or the project of your choice.

Packaging Yourself as a Professional

This seminar session concentrates on presenting yourself as a serious and organized professional artist. The instructor will discuss cover letters, resumes, images slides versus CDs, and artists' statements with an eye to making them represent you in the best way possible. A great session if you are getting ready to put together a grant proposal (like the upcoming Textile Center Jerome Fiber Artists' Grant), a gallery show entry or to present your work to others.

Opening an Etsy Shop

Your Digital Camera Hands-On

Bring your digital camera for an evening of “getting to know your camera”. We will look at common camera settings that could help you get great photos of your fiber art - macro mode, white balance, flash or no flash - and what all of those little icons mean. Every camera is different, so come prepared to jump in and explore. You must bring your digital camera in good working order, along with its instruction manual.

Photographing Small Objects

The right lighting and background can help you get great photos of your small works of art. In this hands-on seminar, we will set up and practice photographing small art objects (less than 12 in) using several different light settings. Learn to set up some simple and inexpensive light box options to get you started with a “studio” of your own. You may bring one art piece to photograph (optional) and your digital camera in good working order, along with its instruction manual.

What's up with Blogs?

Blogs or weblogs are often used as an online diary or journal, but they can do so much more! Use a blog as journal of your work in progress, a portfolio of finished pieces, an online newsletter or even function as a simple web shop - all depending on what you want to do. In 10 minutes, you can have a website up and running. Come and see how a blog is born - we will make a new one step-by-step during class!

3-D Techniques & Mixed Media

Treasure Pendants with Resin Bottle Caps
Saturday October 4
10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Preserve a favorite bit of lace or treasured photo by embedding it in resin, making a one-of-a-kind pendant you can wear and treasure. In this class you will use a bottle cap as a frame to create a miniature collage of paper, fabric and ephemera. You will then learn how to mix and use a polymer resin to preserve your art. Create a pendant, ornament or charm to use with other fiber art projects, and get lots of inspiration! Bring your fabric scraps, copies of old family photos and tiny treasures. Materials fee $8, payable to the instructor.

Bare Bottoms for Basket Beginners
Friday October 10, 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Saturday October 11, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Start with a “bare bottom” and weave around one of the biggest challenges in willow basketry! Working up from a pre drilled wooden base, you'll use traditional techniques to transform willow rods into sturdy European-style wicker baskets. You'll learn to stake up, wale, rand, control shape and border down. Then, when you've gained confidence, you'll learn how to create woven bases (or lids!) for future baskets. You can expect to complete at least one medium-sized basket, and get a good start on another. Show-and-tell sessions include basket history, traditional basket styles and willow preparation. Some basket making experience is preferred and some hand strength is necessary. Materials fee $55, (includes wooden base, handouts, 3# prepared willow and tool use) payable to instructor.

In this class, you will create freestanding papier mâché icons, or sacred objects that reflect your divine essence. On the first day, you will carve a Styrofoam armature and cover it with papier mâché. On the second day, multiple techniques will be demonstrated to create a beautiful textured surface using Paperclay, textured fabric and paint. You can experiment with making a face or use face molds that will be provided. Finished piece will measure 15-17 inches high. Going Green

Crochet with Plastic
Wednesday October 15 6:00 - 9:00 pm
Learn to crochet with plastic bags and other recycled materials! Start with techniques to cut and chain bags together, then discuss what types of plastic work best. You will start your first project - a water bottle cozy - during class while the instructor is there to provide tips and guidance. We will talk about crocheting other alternative materials such as used t-shirts or old towels. For inspiration, the instructor will bring along many more projects using this technique, such as tote bags, coin purses, and rugs. A basic knowledge of crocheting recommended - you should be able to do a basic chain stitch. **Ages 14 and up welcome. Supply list provided.

Create beautiful fabric gift bags that you can use again and again! You will make two fabric gift bags with drawstring closures from fabulous seasonal and festive fabrics.
